Spring Has Come - How Will We Cope?
We in the south have been subjected to a miserable allergy season
with no end in sight. Mild and moist weather over the last 12 months
has encouraged plant growth (and pollination). And our few cold snaps
may not have been enough to kill our insect pests, so get out there and
start scouting your plants for varmints and diseases - just remember
that chemicals can cause collateral damage to beneficial species.
You have other safer options. In the case of fire ants, you'll have no
trouble finding them because they're just outside your door. They've
moved their nests to higher ground (right next to our home's foundation)
to escape the flooding. See the University of Florida's
solutionsforyourlife.com website for sustainable fire ant control techniques.
